I would recommend you to do a fresh install of nagios 2.2 instead and then try to migrate the host/service-definitions.
I would suspect the checks and core components have improved and changed so drastically that you have to do so much work in order to get an upgrade to work that a fresh reinstall would be much easier and give a cleaner result.
