what threw me were the inconsistancies, plus the error i received after clicking host detail. I did a ps axu | grep nagios and had like six instances of nagios running. I killed them each one by one then restarted the service. Problem seems to have gone away.

Try restarting Nagios first. This one's actually a FAQ:

Suggesting anything else at this point would be pure speculation,
especially when there's a likely cause that hasn't been ruled out yet.
