Thanks very much; that was pretty much all I needed (although I do feel that my ideal situation of an alert staying red until manually cleared ought to be considered in situations such as log checking that are kind of logically distinct from situations which really can clear themselves ( e.g. CPU load critical; disk space at 0% free etc.). Anyhow, no big deal; thanks again.

You must set the max_check_attempts for these services to 1. Also,
read the manual about 'volatile' checks. Unfortunately Nagios
does not support your ideal situation of log check staying red
until manually cleared.
