Okay, when I remove the nrpe file from /etc/xinetd.d, restart xinetd, and telnet to port 5666 from my nagios system, I get a connection refused instead of "Connection closed by foreign host." So it's clearly running out of xinetd and not getting filtered by any firewall in between, I've also verified the IP is set correctly in the xinetd config, and the relevant files are all world readable: $ ls -l /etc/xinetd.d/nrpe /etc/nagios/nrpe.cfg /dev/*rand* crw-r--r-- 1 root root 1, 8 Jun 24 2004 /dev/random crw-r--r-- 1 root root 1, 9 Dec 8 2005 /dev/urandom -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6.9K Aug 24 16:49 /etc/nagios/nrpe.cfg -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 479 Aug 25 14:55 /etc/xinetd.d/nrpe I also installed nagios-plugins from the same rpm files on this system and the one that is working on, and am using the same configuration files on both, so I'm not sure what else to look for. Can anybody think of any other way I could troubleshoot this or any other information that might help?
