Sorry to tell you this now but there is a much easier way, just install ssmtp and then make sure the line in ssmtp.conf which defines your mail server points to which ever mail server you want to use. Simple as that. You can then mailx all you like. If you have a decent distro like Gentoo this is the default, very simple. I use mailx and it works very simply, no fuss.
