Is it consistent for all your services? I know my checks across NRPE don't return values back either every now and again when my remote client is doing some CPU and Hard drive intense work. I'll get a timeout then, which I usually just bump up the timeout. Perhaps try bumping your timeout up a few seconds to 15 or even 20. Are the clients pretty busy machines?
