What are ways that anyone has found to monitor switches and routers effectivly, other than adding a service to them.  i have WAN locations that i would like to monitor but the switches/routers in between would all stay pending if i dont have the host up service on them.  i only want them to be checked if there is an issue and nagios is back tracing.
