Originally I was a bit dubious of changing this from all the warnings that were in the config file, but (thanks to someone else who took the plunge) I set this to 1 when I configured my new Nagios 2.7 server and have not had any negative effects. It can get a bit confusing sometimes as I haven't found a definitive list of which settings use the interval_length, but that could be just me skipping over bits in the manual :) .)
