Yes, you can do that.
I use nagios on linux and nrpe on aix monitored servers.
You can compile plugins for aix system or you can get it on specialized
sites.

You'll find some nagios plugins and other stuff pre-compiled for AIX
at http://nagiosexchange.org . I've found the snmp plugins are useful
for monitoring AIX servers too.
