Are you experiencing check latency/problems or is this just an exercise? What are the specifics of where you are now and where you want to be with regard to performance (x number of y type of checks at z interval; current latency and execution time information, etc)? What symptoms are you seeing if you're experiencing problems? I'd start with #1, #3, #7 ,#8, #9 and #10 of the Performance Tuning documentation.
