I'm quite certain that using the /usr/bin/perl method bypasses embedded
perl. Search the archives, you'll find lots of evidence of that. 

If you want to troubleshoot further, did you capture the STDOUT/STDERR
of the plugin while nagios was running it? What was the result? Did you
run the plugin as the nagios user from the command line? What was the
result?
