Have you changed the OS level of the system you are running check_ping from? Perhaps you accidentally installed an old version of the nagios-plugins? I had a similar issue trying to run check_ping 1.3 from a Solaris 10 system. The old version of check_ping did not understand the Solaris 10 ping output.
