Here at work, I use notify-by-epager, and then
<nine-digit-number>@email.uscc.net to SMS our cingular phones.

Many people overlook the fact that many cell providers have a similar
setup.

This is what I use for sending sms alerts in Nagios / Groundwork Open
Source

notify-by-sms

echo -e
"<$HOSTNAME$>\n$SERVICEDESC$\n$SERVICESTATE$\n$SERVICEOUTPUT$\n$LONGDATE
TIME$"
|gnokii --sendsms $CONTACTPAGER$ >>
/usr/local/groundwork/nagios/var/gnokii.log 2>&1

Gnokii and a Telular GSM phone plugged into the serial port and you
are good to go. Other alternatives might be a Motorola GSM phone via
USB....
