I used to run a lot of SNMP checks, but every now and again I would get bottlenecks with bandwidth. This would then cause the checks to timeout and fail. I switched to using NRPE and I haven't had any issue like that since. Checks seem to be done much faster. This is my experience using it in regards to limited, or constrained, bandwidth across networks. I do both CPU load and disk space checks and definitely prefer the disk check across NRPE.
