Well, you won't see nrpe 'running' unless xinetd is actively handling a
request. That's what xinetd does. Do you still see the xinetd error
after restarting xinetd? Can you telnet to port 5666 of your remote box?
Have you considered running nrpe in daemon mode if you can't figure out
the nuances of xinetd?
