I don't think that your box "thinks" it's beeing attacked because of an ICMP-Packet or two. I had a similar issue, and it was a routing problem. I had an OK-State as long as i kept pinging the servers, if I didn't do that, traffic wouldn't find it's way to the host (or back, I'm not sure anymore).
