Assuming the reason you don't want to log in is to avoid sending the login information over the network, an alternative would be to run check_mysql and/or check_mysql_query locally on the MySQL server via check_by_ssh/NSClient/NRPE/etc. Or if you don't like the security ramifications of those you could run those checks locally on the MySQL and publish the output via SNMP or even on a web page if you have a web server running on your MySQL server.
