If it's just to educate yourself, you could do a lot worse than have a go at linking to a hobbyist weather station for example from http://www.lacrossetechnology.com/ . If you get one with a PC interface using the WD2300 chip set, you can use Open2300 ( http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Open2300/UserGuide ) to interrogate the station from your linux system. There are various other open-source projects to interface with other weather stations, for example from Oregon Scientific. A weather station makes a good project because you need to think about how you will handle the various different kinds of data.
