I had not heard of Merlin; that's very interesting, and thanks for the link. Since I had already come so far with the "native" solution that the online documentation describes, I wanted to take one more shot at it. Since I'm on Gentoo, I checked, and found that there was a newer version in the portage tree (3.1.2). I upgraded, and everything started working. Apparently, my problems with ENABLE_NOTIFICATIONS was just a bug.
