For starters -- well, don't do that. The guys I work with get a royal beating if they turn stuff off, when there are things like acknowledgements and downtimes that will expire themselves and save you from the inevitable "something broke while we forgot we had the monitoring turned off." If you have a check you only want done periodically, and know generally how often you want to check, set up a suitable check interval.
