My guess is this is a bug. I see the same here on v3.2.0. I think it used to work ok in version 2. I couldn't see anything for it in the tracker at http://tracker.nagios.org/view_all_bug_page.php so it might be worth adding it as a bug in there (if that's the thing to do - I can't say I've ever reported a bug myself in the past).
