Happily, I haven't had the [dis]pleasure of hitting that particular scenario. A more intelligent design would be to have physical server pairs, as I really don't like the reliance on our VM infrastructure. However, the ESX team has their own monitoring, and with the stability they've shown (knock on wood, heh) it wasn't deemed worth it to increase our physical host count for this purpose.
