I am not going to use the pusher I had sharpened.  I think it's the culprit.

Maureen,

You might be getting a bit over zealous.  When I first used a sharp metal 
pusher I had to be careful not to start peeling away the natural nail.  When it 
grows out it will be thinner and crack.
