Lisa,
Fungal infections don't always have any color or smell. In the early
stages, they can be clear. The thumb could have started out as "mechanical
damage" (she did say she bent it back). The a bacteria or fungus can settle
in there if the area is not treated. The once that nail plate is detached
from the nailbed, a fungal infection can easily take hold. And yes, it can
spread to the other nails.

It's hard for us to tell what it is through cyberspace of course, but if it
is a fungal infection, this is what I'd do:

Tell her to go see her doc. (yes, she probably will not want to do that, but
you have to tell her to do that to CYA) Once it is established that her nail
is not seriously bad, she needs to use Dr. G's on ALL of her nails so they
don't continue to cross contaminate.
Enhancements on a fungal infection? Not recommended. Once you see a
definitive line across the nail bed where it's detached and attached,
depending on how far down it is, you may be able to have an enhancement on
the nail. As long as she is using the Dr. G's on all the nails, she should
be able to wear enhancements on them.

I hope this helps if not for this client, perhaps in the future.

Simmy,
It is not green or yellow and does not have a smell. It is just lifted
from the nail bed from the free edge half way up the nail.

Hi Lisa,

Are you sure she didn't get a fungal infection in her thumb that has
possibly spread to the pointer?

Subject: NailTech:: Client problem

Hi,
I have a client that I have been doing acrylics on for a year. I use YN
but recently have switched to Entity. The last time she came in her thumb
nail was curling under the free edge and was lifting away from the nail bed.
I asked her if she had any recent trama to the nail and she said not that
she knew of, but a few days later she said that she bent it back doing
laundry. Now her pointer finger on the same hand is doing the same thing.
Could this be an allergic reaction to something that I am using? I have
soaked off a few times and did new sets on her at her request over the year.
Could this be a reaction to acetone? I want to take them off and give her a
break for awhile until her thumb and pointer grow out, but she's telling me
that she doesn't want to be without her nails. I don't want this problem to
get any worse. Please, can anyone offer me some advice?
Thank you in advance.
