Ah, Quinn, this is a mess, a friend and your "boss" and a "landlord" all wrapped in one. Sounds like she is not trying to "screw" anyone, she is an owner that is uneducated and ill informed in running a salon with boothrenters. She is scared to death that her boothrenters will leave and take the clients with them and leave her with no income. But as you pointed out, the client will follow the nail tech/stylist, not the salon. Unless the consumer is unhappy with their current service, they will follow their tech. She needs to understand this. This owner is old school, this is the way it used to be, salon owners hoarding customers records. As we have grown as an industry, owners realize that they can't keep the clients, it is the client's choice. A good salon owner understands this very difficult balance. A good salon owner will keep the boothrenters happy and give them their freedom so they never want to leave. They have to loose the control issues. I have no problem with the cleaning, a schedule should be posted with what needs to be done. That should be put in a contract. I have a very big problem with her controlling the clients and controlling how much money you should make by making the appointments which I know you understand. And your statement that she books the new clients with who she wants is wrong, of course she shouldn't be doing this because of the boothrenter situation, but also should be done on a rotation situation, not who is her favorite person at the moment. There is nothing in our Indiana State Law/Rules (Cosmetology Laws) that discuss boothrenters or employees. This is an IRS issues, and the Department of Indiana Revune Issue. You don't want to be the bad guy, I know what you are saying, but Quinn, if you don't do something, you will get more and more frustrated and this will get worse. You are losing money. The more she controls boothrenters the more likely she will lose everyone. This is not good for you,your co workers or her. Since she is a freind of yours, I would take her quietly aside and give her papers on describing a boothrenter, I have included the link from the IRS so she can read and understand it. You know the old saying, don't kill the messenger and this could be rough. I know this will be hard, but unless you do something it will get worse. You HAVE the choice of of leaving this alone, discussing this with her and give her a chance or find another location. It is what you want to deal with. A boothrenting salon can be very successful if salon owners will lose the control issues. Besides I don't think these salon owners understand that it just takes one boothrenter, just one, that screws up and doesn't pay taxes. The boothrenter gets caught and the boothrenter panics and says, "hey, the salon owner did this and that and blah blah, the owner should have paid my taxes"!! Wham, the salon owner then is audited and has to pay these back taxes because of control issues. Why would salon owners want to live with this fear? I am in a great salon, best salon owners in the world. We are all boothrenters, and very happy. They leave us alone, they support us, and we have a kick butt contract. Maybe it is because the owners wife works for the Labor Department and understands the diff. between an employee and a boothrenter. They understand that their income depends on our freedom. I will ask permission to reprint the contract so your owner will understand what it takes to have a successful salon. Good Luck Quinn. Hope I have helped a little.
