Val,
I get my business cards through Vista Print and I always make a set
with an appointment reminder on the back for at the front desk then I
make a second set that has a line:
  Referred by ____________________
(and my client that I give the card to fills in their name)
then at the bottom it says:
Present this card to receive 20% off your first service

I tell my clients that every time I get one of these back WITH THEIR
NAME ON THE CARD for a new referral they will receive $5 off their
next service
I tell them to tell the referral that they have to have the card for
the discount ( this keeps me from doing the "well, what color hair did
the lady have, how tall was she...etc)

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions :)
