Thank you both for the response.
1) Lynette, I am the lucky one to be able to do this.  These women are a hoot!!!
2) I agree with both of you that she may not realize what she is doing to her
nails.  My thinking is with the arthritis she doesn't have much feeling left in
her fingers.  She did say that she does absolutely nothing since she moved to
her apartment, no cleaning, no dishes no laundry and she loves it.  She does
knit.  I'm just really disappointed as I really wanted to help her.  I just
don't think anything is going to stick.  If it were the prep or the product,
all fingers would be chipping, peeling not just one hand.  I will talk to her
more the next time she comes in!
Again, many thanks!!
Have a great Day
Kim

I agree with Lynnette... before you "ask" her about scraping and pickin up.
Think about some of the things she has told you about.. in busy talk.

Does she clean ?  What products does she use.. and how does she use them ?
SOS Pads maybe ?  Does she use her hands to scrap things off of a skillet for
instance?
Don't be surprised.. just because you don't do it.. doesn't mean she doesn't!

Something as simple as sewing.. can mess up nails..  Having "arthur" as a best
friend is not easy on the way a person picks up, opens up, or reaches for
something.. the danty time is now over w/ arthur around..

What kind of work does she do ?  There is so many questions.. that I wouldn't
even worry about the product and application, not at this point.

Also.. I have natural nails.. my nails are (usually) extremely strong and very
seldom do I break a nail. My polish usually stays on a week w/ no chipping.
Hum...

Weak, peeling and soft nails .. the polish does not stay on easily, either does
most products.
Think of it this way, if you put several coats of paint on a piece of poster
board.. let it dry .. then, start waving it bending it.. exposing it to
elements.. what is that paint going to do ?
Its going to crack.. chip and probably come off.  Because that poster board is
soft.

If you put that paint on a piece of wood.. do the same.. its going to stay,
because it doesn't bend.. its hard and the paint sinks in and stays put. You
can wave that board for double the time it took for the poster board to get
nasty looking and the wood board will still look good.

I even cashier part time and my polish stays nice.. so what is it that I have
that she doesn't ?   I have a surface that the polish stays on.

Also.. since I am use to "nails" I will keep mine out of certain elements, and
my mouth! I don't pick..
Many times people who "get nails" have always picked, pulled, bite etc etc..
they are not going to stop these habits automatically.. its second nature to
them.. like breathing or licking their lips. They don't even realize they are
doing it.

I also know the above is OH So True.. because for 28 yrs I had no nails I bit
mine.
I've had it both ways.. I know the dif. I also know the excuses.

So.. before you ask.. think it through.  Drop a pencil and see how she picks it
up.
I scoop.. I don't grab and bang my nails down to pick it up. A key laying on
the desk.. I scoop.. I don't grab w/ my nails.  A can.. give her a can of soda
( pop )  to open. While your talking and getting the table ready..

I once had a client that came back to me once a week for "fixes" on acrylic.  I
tried everything on her.. I spent a small fortune, trying to find the right
acrylic for her.
I questioned my self too. Guess what.. she was getting nasty w/ me.. saying how
it is a waste of her time to come if they are going to get that bad that fast..
That hurt me.. I "guaranteed" my work so everything I did for her was pretty
much free every week.  Some times she came in it was so bad I did a full new
set for nothing $$ !

During small talk.. I found out.. she was having a bad week.. ( a business
woman w/ a secretary &  no family to care for )  she was preparing to move
things around "again" in the house and she had just finished redoing furniture.
I said .. what do you mean re-doing. Oh I have some antiques and some furniture
I was refinishing .. and after months, I am finally finished and ready to move
those things into the house.. when the painting is finished!

It hit me like a ton of bricks... right in the face.  She was re-doing her
house.. floors being striped, walls cleaned and painted.. furniture being
striped and refinished.. chemicals!  The hardest chems in the world was being
used.. and w/ those nails!
Geez Louise!
I regrouped.. finished her nails.  And when she started to get a bit testy.. at
the end. Thinking I'd say oh that's ok.. we have to figure out these
products...
I said... since I only had to replace 4 nails this week and the back fill was a
bit testy..
the charge is $40 today.

She was shocked.. in disbelief ! She said well that is a bit much for nails
that don't stay on  more than a week don't you think? Looking at me cocky!
I looked up and smiled and said no.. not really for nails that are stripping
floors, furniture and lord only knows what else ? You see it wasn't my
technique or the nail products, it was your home renovations that were messing
w/ your nails. Not me. When it is my fault I don't accept payment.. when it is
your doings .. it's $40 today. She paid and left.

She didn't come back for a few months after that.. then all the sudden.. there
she was. Said, I bet you didn't expect to see me again ?  I smiled, I  said I
wouldn't have bet on that.. how are you ? We went from there.

Kim,
First, bless your heart for what you are doing. It takes a special person...
Okay-- I NEVER cap the free edge. I never have peeling back. If the nail is
done right, there is no need for it.
Maybe if she uses her nails in a way that scrapes them, it will come away--
especially if it is capped. Think about it-the gel is wrapped around the nail
free edge now. When the client drops something, she automatically picks it up
scraping her nails in the process.
You said her nails peel. There is a reason. Could be anything, but my guess is
that she does not know how to use her nails!!!!
For my clients that peel, I use resin only on the free edge. It helps.
As for the capping, why do we not cap with acrylic? If the product is cured, it
should adhere and not pull away.
OH- if you ask her if she taps or scrapes her nails, expect her to tell you
no!!!
Buenos dias,
Lynnette

Subject: NailTech:: Arthritic hands and gel overlay questions

Good Morning All,
I need your help.  I have been working in a salon within a retirement
community.  It's wonderful.  I do mostly manis and pedis but I did do a gel
overlay on Saturday on a lady that has sever arthritis in her hands.  She loves
her nails done but regular polish won't stay on because her nails are peeling
at the free edge.  So, I put clear gel overlay on her and she was very
excited.  I cleaned up the free edge and I think I did a good prep.  BUT
yesterday she came back in and the gel and her nails are peeling at the free
edge!!!  There is no lifting at the cuticle or the sides.  I was aware of
capping and thought I had taken extra care in making sure each nail is capped.
Also, it seems to be on her left hand, all four fingers and she is right
handed.  I beleive the peeling is due to bad circulation in her fingers as
there is a blue tint to her nails at the cuticle.
So, here's the question:  Did I do something wrong or is there something else I
can use to help her with her nails?  I used Nailite extra hard clear gel.  I
prepped, put on bonding, two very thin coats and cured 3 minutes each.
I appreciate any suggestions you wonderful, knowledgeable techs have!!  Many
thanks in advance!!
