Sorry to hear the news, however... modern day medicine has come a long way! I am a 2 year survivor woo-hoo! As far as her nails go...of course it depends which medicine for chemo that her dr decides to give her. When I went thru chemo last year I was told the "normal" routine mix for breast cancer was 4 treatments (every other week) of AC (adriamycin and cytocin) ...which didn't bother my nails... (hair loss occurs usually after second treatment) then the next step was 4 treatments (every other week) of Taxol...which I did not tolerate so they switched it to 9 treatments of taxatere (every week) This drug is known to attack the skin and nails. Everyone's reaction is different. Of all my friends that have had BC...they told me their "nails got crappy and it took about a year to get better".... I lost all my nails (hands and feet) and they are still crappy (approx 1 1/2 years since I finished treatment) I had acrylics on until the nails started to separate from the nail plate...and that was close to the end of my treatments.. BUT all this info aside...I would definitely ask her Doctor and see what he/she says. I did my own nails...the issue might be her lower resistance to infections and the chance of her getting an infection from the tech etc....(I don't know if you do them or not ) My dr. never mentioned it and I talked ALL the time about nails to the chemo nurses...I even gave them gifts at the end of treatment of nailtek hydration therapy, a glass file and a polish. Just a little advice...AC is supposed to get you very nauseous....a friend told me to ask for a drug called EMENDS (spelling?) it is a series of 3 pills....1 the day before, the day of and then the day after.... in addition to all the other nausea meds.... using that ....I never got nauseous. Good luck! Maybe Karen can add something else...I am not sure how her nails got.
