As maddening as it may be, I understand if Cosmoprof/Maly's/etc choose to cater
to hair stylists. Cosmos outnumber nail techs and these are big, corporate
franchises that probably spend an impressive amount of money every year on
market analysis to discover that they make more money off of cosmos than nail
techs.
Fine. That's capitalism and if that's what they want to do-- whatever.
I refuse, however, to buy the notion that there is no money in nail supplies.
That's utter and outrageous crap. The problem is that these big suppliers are
refusing to supply the nail industry. They put a fraction of one or two
company's products on half an aisle and then, when that product doesn't
represent the same numbers in sales as the same amount of space dedicated to
hair products-- Corporate decides that nail products just don't sell, so
they're going to cut back.
Well. It takes a long time to go through a bottle of polish. Even longer now
that there are so many alternatives to tradtional polish. Goodness knows! It's
not like the suppliers are encouraging salons to RETAIL the polish. And it
takes a long time to go through a box of tips, or a bottle of glue. They want
to compare our product usage to hair color or perm solution. In that case then
yeah, the nail products aren't going to move as fast and won't represent the
same sales.
But Big Beauty isn't bothering to PAY ATTENTION and carry single use items like
files, buffers, and sanding arbors in BULK at reasonable prices. And they
aren't staying up on state regulations and promoting the fact that (in CA
anyway) these ARE single use items. Suppliers could make significantly more
money if they would promote that fact. You know how many professionals get
their info from their supply rep instead of the state board? If the rep came in
and said, "Hey, we have these 50 packs of files for $12-- great buy since you
have to throw them away after every use... oh yeah! You have to throw these
away, the state will fine you if they catch you re-using them...." they'd sell
tons.
Cosmoprof just started carrying sanding arbors at all-- little boxes of 100
that sell for something like $12. ?!!!!
I can't reasonably rely on Cosmoprof to supply me with retail inventory
either. I want to sell the CND Scentsations lotions-- think I can get them?
Cosmoprof stocks a bottle or two at a time. It depends on which employee I ask
as to whether or not they say they can order for me.
It's frustrating as all heck. They don't supply us and then they use the fact
that we have to buy elsewhere as an excuse for why they don't supply us.
OH! But my point was! WHY aren't the NAIL MANUFACTURERS stepping in and saying
something? Where are CND and OPI while their distributors are clearing their
products off the shelves? Why isn't CND insisting that it's distributors carry
their products? Why isn't OPI working with it's distributors to ensure that
OPI's customers can get OPI's products?
CND and OPI have a lot to lose from this downsizing. Cosmoprof and Maly's will
just make their revenue off of other products-- but the nail companies that are
not longer represented on their shelves are the ones who need to be making a
stand! Since CND and OPI don't sell direct (unless someone knows something I
don't? I've been on both websites recently and still don't see any option to
buy.) where am I supposed to get their products? Where is ANYONE in Visalia
suppose to get their products?
Why doesn't CND want me to buy their new polish line? Why doesn't OPI want me
to retail their polish line? Why do these companies have shrinking booths at
tradeshows? Why don't they notice the correlation?
