LOVE it Maggie! We should organize a universal convergence on all of our local
news stations the same day to make it an even bigger impact!
I sadly never got a "form e-mail" from Dr. Oz even though I did write in...

Subject: NailTech:: FARK.com and my smart new neighbor

Well, yay. Like my Facebook update says, fortunately, the majority of FARK's
readership is male and probably isn't taking the story too seriously. But if
you've never heard of FARK.com, you may be surprised to learn that the site has
a MASSIVE readership and when a link gets posted there, it makes some
impressive rounds. And the ABC News story on gel manicures just made FARK.

So I'll actually be expecting THIS story to get some attention.

Now then-- I have a new neighbor here on the fourth floor. Which adds a new
deminsion to our previously female domination of the fourth floor, what with my
little nail studio, the massage therapist a few doors down, and my own
former-client-turned-hairstylist having just opened her own hair studio across
the hall. (The rest of the floor is pretty much un-occupied for the time being
and we like it that way just fine!)

Any way: Enter, Steve. Steve runs a trucking brokerage and spends his days
wandering the halls with his blue tooth headset on, usually enjoying a cold
beverage of the you-need-to-be-over-21 variety in the late afternoons. He likes
to wander into the salons and poke at our retail merchandise and chit chat when
he has a moment. He used to tell me I stink but now I retail soaps that smell
up the whole floor so he likes those better than the acrylic.

Don't misinterpret my story about Steve-- we all adore him and he and his staff
make a great addition to the floor.

And Steve is a pretty smart cookie too.

So he wanders in to smell my soap and give me a hard time just as I'd finished
watching the news story and he asks me how I am today. I told him I was "mostly
good." He wanted to know which part isn't good.

So I gave him a brief synopsis of the news story and how I expect it to be
received by the public and how it will effect the industry-- so we get to
talking a little bit more and I point out to him that, sadly, in most of the
case where the media decides to do a story about the horrors that await at the
local nail salon, they aren't interested in offering a balanced perspective or
focusing on positive aspects, they are going for sensationalism and looking for
whatever will have the biggest impact.

So I told him about the Dr. Oz issue. How many people in the industry wrote in
response to that segment and all we got back was a "hey thanks for watching!"
form letter that pretty much showed that the show didn't bother to READ any of
our letters and doesn't care about what we have to say.

Which is when Steve said, "well then, take that response from the show, put it
together with a copy of what you originally wrote and put it together in a
packet to the LOCAL media options with a nice little, "Dear
Insert-name-of-local-media-personality-here: I am a professional nail
technician working here in Insert-name-of-area. Recently on the (Dr. Oz/ABC
News/ whatever) show a segment was featured on gel manicures/acetone/whatever
that gave inaccurate information/ gave misleading information/ failed to offer
viewers valuable information about how to make an informed choice in order to
avoid suffering the consequences shown in the story.... etc etc... When the
show in question originally aired, the professional nail industry responded
with hundreds of emails and letters, but this is all we got in response. I
would appreciate the opportunity to set the record straight/ offer more
information/ asuage concerns among consumers in the immediate community by
providing valuable information that the original show failed to address....
would you consider doing a piece on....."

I think I more than adequately drew out the type of letter to write to your
local media there.

But Steve has a great idea there to use our LOCAL media outlets as a means of
rebuttal to these shows while also drumming up some publicity-- for ourselves
AND for our entire industry!

If everyone who got that form letter from Dr Oz calls up their local news
stations, news papers, etc, we should be able to get enough press to cover most
of the nation.

So that's my little adventure for the day and a pretty crafty idea from Steve
the Neighbor.
