I am with you on the national sales tax.
Diana, when I was hit with this, our accountant said that the companies do
have to report on each state sales and that is how they know. She could be
wrong......all I know is that I had to pay it!
In PA, needs are not taxed. Food, clothing... Bathing suits..taxed...not a
need... Those slutty platform shoes I want... NOT taxed!!!!! LOL..
It is ask a pain in the butt.

Buenos dias!

Jeez, Lynnette, I forgot you went thru this.

They way I understand this all, retail vs usage, vs home usage, you follow
your state laws. Not the sales tax of the state you are purchasing from.

So if you buy clothing from another state on-line. And your state does not
have sales tax on clothing, then you don't have to pay it.
If your state says that clothing is taxed then you have to pay it.

This is self-reporting. Which means when you do your taxes at the end of
the year, you have kept track of your out of state purchases(on-line) and
keep track of what is taxable and what is not taxable and send your state
the money. Which also means, that most would have NO idea what is taxable or
not!!!!!!!! When we go to the local stores, the cash register keeps track of
this, ever notice your grocery receipt???????? some items are hit with sales
tax some or not. Now you would have to get a list from YOUR local taxing
unit and find the list and keep track of this.

Basically what is happening your state is saying hey wait a minute. Before
the Internet, you would go shopping at your local malls, retail outlets and
buy things, and paid sales tax.
Now, with the Internet and on-line shopping, you are not purchasing items in
our state, but other states, and we are losing money. We (the state) are
losing money and we want it!

Now what would be easier, and a pain in the butt for all on-line companies,
is to get a tax id number for EACH State, then as the public purchase items,
the on-line company would charge you the sales tax(YOUR STATE), and then the
on-line company would send it to YOUR state. The paperwork would be
enormous for these companies, maybe why they don't do it.

So now my next question would be is how would YOUR state know that you
didn't pay, how did they find out Lynnette owed?
How did they find out about the on-line cigarettes being purchased?
Seems to me that the on-line cigarette companies were either audited by the
IRS which means they(the cigarette online company) had to give a list of
names of people who purchased their product. Or they automatically (by some
law) gave a list of names to the IRS and this triggered the inquiry. Of
course then the IRS would notify your state taxing unit.

I have no idea. Overwhelming paperwork issues for the on-line retailer. And
for us also. The States are struggling. They are broke, and going to do
anything to collect money so they can balance their budgets. And then we
have the 1099 forms. And all this paperwork lands on the consumer and most
of all business.

We are all going to have to hire r own private bookkeepers to keep track of
this crap!!!!!!!!!! LOLOL but hell then the unemployment rate will
drop!!!!!!! Heck we could start something here...........on front of all
Newspapers.............NAIL TECHS SAVE THE USA AND STATE ECONOMY BY
PAPERWORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOLOLOLOL

My best advice is when you go to your accountant this year, ask him
questions. I am no accountant, I am just a news junkie who reads what is
going on in the world.
I wish we could get rid of ALL taxes and just go with a National Sales
tax............then everyone would pay, even those that choose not to work,
pay for what you purchase. Ahhhh, whole other subject and not going to
happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!! diana from indiana
