We do it all of the time.  When you get to the step where you would topcoat,
stop, remove tacky layer, lightly buff, do nail art with acrylic paint.
Once dry, add top coat, lay your gems into wet gel topcoat and wiggle to get
really in place, then add just a little more gel top coat around the gem, by
the time you get it into the light, it will have self leveled smooth.  Cure,
remove tacky layer and you are done!
