We did a Living Social also. The hairdressers who are not busy did most of
those
new people. You should have heard them complain. They were to stupid to realize
it was there chance to get new clients. If they only had a brain.

i just wanna throw my hands in the air and say AMEN! There are people in the
world that get it!!! I want to scream when people who work on commission feel
like its so unfair that they dont get paid higher commissions! Lol and in turn
let it ruin their attitude towards their job and progressing in their careers..
I am gonna take this opp to vent about a situation that I recently dealt with
that made me sooo mad and sad all at the same time... As alot of you know, I am
the proud owner of a successful business of 9 years now. Not a day has gone by
that i havent worked my my bum off. I spend at least 40 hrs a week behind the
chair (i do hair and nails). Moral being I would never ask a tech or stylist to
do more than I am willing to do myself. So... I had a lovely little cosmo
working for me, commission, awesome nail skills, awesome hair skills, very bad
at
business building and selling herself. A year and a half and she still only had
about 4 regular clients. But bless her heart she wanted the busy bus to drop em
off and she was ready to get on it...lol. So i did a living social deal... Mani
pedi. We sold 500! What i wouldnt have given for the opportunity to have that
many new clients in my chair with no effort! As most of u prob know how the
'deal of the days' work, the salon got half of the sale price. In our case it
was 12 bucks. So i told her that to cover costs i would provide her the clients
and 100%of any upsell she made. Rember shes a cosmo... Helloo haircolor at
100%! Well she lasted about 2 weeks and said she was tired of working for
free!!!!! Unbelievable...... Ok.. Im done.....lol If they only had to do the
math on how much their 'free' product is and how little their 40% pays for.....
Shees!

Everytime I hear someone talk about going booth rent because they're sick of
"losing" so much of their money in commission situations-- I laugh.

It never fails: you can expect to spend 50-60% of your gross receipts in
expenses as a renter.

It's certainly possible to get that shaved down, but I think you should plan on
not being able to get below 30% in expenses. It is the way of business.

You can save a LOT of money in supply costs by buying your product in bulk--
buy
a half gallon of monomer instead of 8 oz at a time! Buying in larger quantities
can make a HUGE difference in profitability!

I know for myself-- and probably for most of us-- I COULD spend much less on my
business. But as long as glitter is tax deductible I'm gonna buy GLITTER!

I have my "expenses" categorized between the things that are constant: my rent,
my phone bill, my web hosting, etc. The things that are sliding costs-- like
supplies; how much I spend depends on how busy I am (this is where it's really
important to kn
