Ugh! The dreaded striping tape application! Here are a few tips that may help:
Try to "unroll" the tape so it stays flat, if you unroll it and it has curled
up, it WILL lift up! So, slowly unroll the sticky stuff from the roll and try
to keep it flat, flat, flat.
Cut off any parts that are NOT sticky. Sometimes the beginning of the roll,
maybe a couple of inches, are not as sticky as the rest of the roll. So, as
you unroll, test for stickiness on the underside. Cut away any portion you
have touched, as it will NOT stick!
Using tweezers, or nippers, handle the tape, do not touch it with your skin or
allow to come into contact with dust.
Cut the beginning of the roll at an angle, actually angle the scissors so the
tape is cut angled and not chopped off flat. This will allow the tape to
adhere better to the angle of the nail, where a chopped off flat edge will be
prone to curling up.
Cut the end of the piece at another angle so that it does not hang over the
edge and has what I would call a beveled edge at the end of the nail.
Apply to slightly tacky polish, you can paint a line where you want to place
the tape, allow to dry a minute or so, then place the tape with tweezers and
cut the excess tape at an angle. Use an orangewood stick to gently and evenly
press the tape onto the polish, not into the polish.
Dry the polish where you placed the tape. Now you can apply top coat (or two!)
I brush a thin layer of topcoat along each side of the tape, (this brings the
polish and the tape to the same level) and a tiny smear of topcoat to each end
and then blow dry, then brush a coat over the entire design/nail. I would
advise the client to use top coat on a schedule of one coat later that day, and
then every couple days add another one.
If they notice a rough edge, tell them to gently smooth it with a fine emery
board, and apply topcoat over the whole nail.
Some nail art tape is just a better quality than others, so if yours is still
curling, try another brand.
Hope this helps!
