Have an extensive book/website of your work, and connect with a lead nail technician from a team or a brand that has lots of teams, such as CND, OPI, Zoya. Of course, all of the major retail brands have teams, as well. NYFW has all the shows, but it also has a ton of VIP events and beauty lounges that are offering manicures. Many of the talent agencies host them, as well as the brands, so being registered as nail talent, along with the hair and makeup artists, is a good inroad.
NYFW is the largest in the US, but there are major fashion weeks in Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, and then in smaller cities who show local designers. A great way to start is working your local fashion week. I just returned from the beginning of NYFW (I do marketing/PR). Even publicists like me often need to hire nail artists, hair stylists, makeup artists, etc. for our events. So as Jenn said, networking, networking, networking.
