I've been a member of this board for a while now but haven't really posted anything of note. So much for quiet...here's one for you gals:
I'm just trying my best to hang in this business. I'm extremely frustrated with my status at my current salon but in this town...it's slim pickings!! I've been licensed for 5 years, at this salon 6. I have a tiny loyal clientele but I'm making no money. I can't even afford to buy products at this point. I keep up with trends and my own education. I'm good at what I do. In lieu of paying rent I help out around the shop. I couldn't pay rent if I wanted to...I don't make enough to do so. For the last 2 weeks I've brought home $80. That's $40 each week!! It's killing me. I love, love, love doing nails and I would hate to go back to working in an office 9 to 5 but I don't know what else to do. I am in an Aveda hair salon. 2 stylists and myself. They've been in business for 20 years. Needless to say, they have their clientele. I began working there part-time as a receptionist (I was a hair client there before working there and had been laid off from another job so I was desperate.) During the first month of employment, numerous women came in asking for nail services which weren't offered. I promptly went to school, graduated in 6 months, aced my tests and bought everything I needed to perform any nail service that was requested. I even bought my own spa pedicure chair. Not once since I have been there has any advertising been done...not even to announce that the salon now was able to do nail services! I offered to split the cost of an ad and was put off over and over again until I gave up. We are in a very small town on a side street. Most people don't even know we are there, let alone that nails services are offered. I've tried flyers (we all know how well those work), passing out business cards, etc....nothing seems to work. Everyone in the area goes to a small Asian shop that's been in business for years. I hear complaint after complaint about the place but it's still always busy. I finally thought I found a job with JC Penney. It would have been an hour commute each way but I was willing to do it. I was offered $9 and hour and 55% commission - health insurance as well. I was thrilled. The hiring process seemed to drag on for a couple of weeks. Then I was asked to come in for a corporate meeting (even though I was officially hired yet.) At that meeting the whole pay scheme was changed. It was commission only...period. The nail techs had the same scale as the hair stylists. So to make a decent living, the stylists would have to do about one foil/highlight and cut per day to make their quota and take home about $450 per week. For the nail tech to take home the same amount of money, one would have to do 27 pedicures in a week!! I don't know about you ladies but I would be crippled if I had to do that many pedi's in a week!! Lol!! So needless to say, I felt hoodwinked. I believe the manager knew the change was coming which is why he dragged out the hiring process. I declined the job. Since then I've kind of given up hope. I have no idea what to do at this point. I check online constantly but it seems that most salons don't post job listings so I can't find anywhere else to go. Bottom line: If any of you know of a salon in East Tennessee that's looking for a hardworking, diligent and talented nail tech please let me know!!!!!!!!! Thanks for letting me rant!!! Have a great weekend!!
