I'm at the "slowing down" end of the career for nails also. I've been working in a salon for 32 years. Between this horrible Ohio weather, that has caused SO many calamity days (meaning ZERO income for ME and the massage therapists at the spa!) and the clients who leave for Florida after or before Christmas, it is SLOW SLOW SLOW! I am at my wits end, as my husband has taken time off work for health issues. At the opposite end of the spectrum, I am working in another career (as a firearms specialist) and if I wasn't earning some money from THAT this financial ship would have SUNK a long time ago! It is a crossroads, on the one hand, I just don't have the energy or patience to recruit and "train" new clientele, but my salon paycheck suffers terribly due to those issues. I am not busy enough with the other 3 jobs I work to just quit doing nails so.. sigh.. what to do...

Story idea? I would love to see an article about this, too! Last year after some sudden health issues I had to cut back my hours in the salon. I was burning the candle at both ends & in the middle, too, because as the Nail Tech Event of the Smokies grew, so did the number of hours it took to run all the behind-the-scenes stuff that makes it tick. As a result, I went from working full time behind the nail table to part time. So my income also was cut in half. I'm not close to retirement (not even 50 yet), but by the same token working on The Event does not yet afford me the salary that I lost at the salon. The potential for drawing an Event salary is in the future tho, so I'm doing the balancing act between my 2 roles (nail tech & Event Coordinator) until then. My goal is to eventually be able to cut back to doing nails maybe 3 days a week, with the profits from The Event giving me a paycheck for the other 2 days worth of income. Last week I had a moment of clarity when I finally faced: A) I'd crested the peak of my career as a nail tech (financially speaking) & was now on the downward slope. B) It had to happen at some point, but I thought it wouldn't be for another 10 years, so I am disappointed. C) On the bright side, maybe it's not such a bad thing, since my health has greatly improved. D) I should let go of the guilt for not having a full days worth of clients everyday. E) I'd better kick it into high gear to get my house paid off soon while I still can! Whoever writes this article, please get in touch with me to contribute. I'd love to write it myself, but knowing my limitations now…I simply don't have the time! Whether it is because your are at capacity or transitioning into retirement or any other reason. All the articles I see are about gaining clients. There is a certain finesse involved in no longer accepting clients. I have slowed down, which is what I want. I am nearing retirement but I still need to make money. I am down to 12 clients. Any of you writers out there looking to do a story on retiring techs? I have yet to see any articles about this. How do we retire from doing nails and still earn a little bit of money from our years of knowledge? Nail Techs are aging, there have to be others in this situation.
