Still a bit of a stretch.  They receive money for registered domains (and
attempted to for unregistered domains) in the .COM and .NET namespaces.

my employer was a bidder for .ORG, and gives away EPP software ("ISC OpenReg"), so there's some overlap with the registry/registrar community that verisign might be thinking of.

Didn't Verisign sell off the Registrar stuff, thus making OpenReg not a competitor?
