There was indeed a regression in NAnt 0.85 RC1 with regards to support for Visual C++ projects.  The issue that you ran into with the latest nightly build has now also been fixed in cvs, but the reason why you ran into that issue in the first place was because NAnt could not resolve an assembly reference (the internal error you got was because of a small bug in the reporting of that "error").
 
Can you try using the next nightly build first, and see what assembly was not resolved ?

We are using cruisecontrol.net + nant 0.85-rc1 to build a solution containing many projects. Most of the projects are written in C#, but a few are written in C++
 
Everything works more or less well (except for that we have to do a few tricks with the MIDL task to get it working)
Today a developer checked in a modified project file for one of the C++ projects, and the automated build process failed with error message
 
        INTERNAL ERROR
 
        System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null.
        Parameter name: projectSettings
 
It seems like this was a known problem that had been fixed.
Downloaded latest nant binaries (20050109) and retried. Now there is another error message
