Sweat lodge ritual kills man November 4, 2004 http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,11280996%255E421,00.html A MELBOURNE man has died in a bizarre native American purification ritual in South Australia's outback. The man, in his 20s, is believed to have died from the trauma of severe dehydration. He died while being driven the 100km from Yankaninna Station, the site of the purification ritual, to Leigh Creek Hospital, about 400km north of Adelaide about 4.30am yesterday. The Royal Flying Doctor Service flew another man, 30, also from Melbourne, who had also taken part in the ritual, to a Port Augusta hospital. Detective Sergeant Peter Hore said the men were part of a group of 11 men and women from Melbourne taking part in a sweat lodge ritual. A sweat lodge ritual is a native North American ceremony, which involves water and hot rocks. "We don't know why they picked this place, but that is one of the things we're going to find out," Det-Sgt Hore said. The group was camped about 6km from the station's homestead and had been there since last Thursday. Yankaninna Station manager Paul Doran said he had been unaware the group was on the property until they came to the house asking to use the phone early yesterday.
