Arundhati Roy urges people to join Iraq resistance Press Trust of India, November 3, 2004 http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1087663,00110004.htm Award-winning Indian author Arundhati Roy on Wednesday called on people to join the resistance against the US-led coalition forces in Iraq. The author of God of Small Things, who will be presented with the Sydney Peace Prize in Sydney later on Wednesday, however, said," one wasn't urging them to join the Mehdi army but to become the resistance, to become part of what ought to be a non-violent resistance against a very violent occupation. "We can't just assume that resistance means terrorism because that would be playing right into the hands of the occupation," she said. The Booker Prize-winning Roy was selected for the prize for her commitment to the philosophy and principles of non-violence. Activists "need to understand that Iraq is engaging in the front lines of empire and we have to... Throw our weight behind the Iraqi resistance," she said. Roy, who had urged Australians to vote against Prime Minister John Howard, a key US ally in the Iraq campaign, in the recent elections, said she it was difficult to see why the war was not a major issue.
