It's been quite awhile since I posted here, so I thought I'd
re-introduce myself to old and new alike.
Lightowl and I currently live in western North Carolina, though we have
spent many years on the road, and living in places like California,
Florida, Arkansas to name a few.
I myself am of Tsalagi (Western), Blackfoot, and Lenni Lenape (Miami
Delaware) descent. I am a direct descendant of Francis Slocum. I was
born and raised in southern California, and though given an Indian name
at birth, was not raised as a traditional. I began "returning to my
roots" in my twenties.
I empathize with Spiritdove -- my real, legal name is Waking Dove and
both Lightowl and I have to deal with New Agers who 1) somewhat copy the
names or 2) pester us with questions about our "real(?) names. Mine was
given to me by a Cherokee Clanmother and the actual spelling and
pronunciation, like yours, is kept off the web.
Lightowl is about 95% Tsalagi (Eastern), the rest of his background is
Haida (Canada).
I am 48, have three grown daughters, and five grandchildren.
We have had our website COUNCILFIRE (http://www.councilfire.com) on the
Internet for over five years, and are getting ready to publish a large,
bi-weekly Native American newspaper.
We are planning to be on the road again in about a year (depending on
current health problems).
That's all I can think of for now, other than to tell some of you I
already know not to give up on me -- I'm still alive and well :-)!
