Relatives of Woods' victims tell concerns
By Lee Schelling

Any signs of prison escapee Larry W. Woods Jr. continue to elude
investigators, while the relatives of his victim want to know how he
escaped and what is being done to find him.

Woods escaped from Indiana State Prison July 9. Investigators believe he
made his escape aboard a garbage truck that was inside prison walls that
morning. No other potential means of escape have been found during the
investigation.

Officials also believe the only way Woods could have escaped in the
garbage truck was for him to have been in the garbage section, since the
rest of the truck is searched.

The garbage is compacted in the truck before leaving the prison wall.

A search of the Deercroft Recycling and Disposal Facility last week for
his body turned up no new leads, officials said. A search of the city
has turned a few purported eyewitness sightings, but nothing concrete.

Woods was serving a 60-year sentence for the murder of Laura Botts and
50 years for the robbery of the restaurant she managed in Marion County.
The robbery netted him $2,400 (He was fired from the business for
problems such as excessive tardiness).

Woods had a projected prison-release date of 2048.

Kirk Botts, husband of Laura, and her father, William Savage, said
Monday they are both concerned Woods is on the loose.

"Well, we've sat back and asked ourselves, 'How did this guy get the
opportunity to escape?' " Savage said by telephone from his out-of-state
home.

Savage said he is concerned Woods was in the honor dormitory at the
prison. That allowed him to have access to much of the prison grounds
inside the main wall.
"This guy was in there for murder. I just don't see why they gave this
opportunity to him," Savage said.

There also was concern the search has not spread further than northern
Indiana, Savage said, adding, "I know his father was in Indianapolis and
his mother, I think, in Ohio. Are (police) staking out these places and
watching for him?"

Savage said there is considerable concern for the well-being of those
involved in Woods' trial, including Woods' former girlfriend, with whom
he had a child.
"She testified against him," he said. "She said he shot Laura."

There also was testimony from a man who was in the same jail as Woods.
He said Woods admitted to the killing, Savage noted.

>From everything he heard, Savage believes Woods committed the robbery
and murder because he needed to pay his monthly rent.

Savage and Botts both said they would like more answers from the Indiana
Department of Correction concerning the extent of the investigation and
search into the Woods matter.

"There's a lot of things we have questions about," Savage said, "and we
really hope someone in Indianapolis or wherever can give us some
answers."

Cecil Davis, Indiana State Prison superintendent, said Monday the search
in the landfill for Woods' body was put on hold.

Davis said 25 to 35 Emergency Squad prison officers and from four to 10
sniffer dogs were part of the search.

Deercroft staff used their bulldozer to help move materials in the
search, Davis said. The search went down 10 feet and involved the use of
high-tech thermal imaging gear.

Davis said the final search at the landfall is still coming, with
arrangements being made for a special dog to be used. The dog is trained
specifically for the locating of dead bodies.

Davis also ordered a complete reassessment of the entire prison
operation, with an emphasis on offender accountability.

"The operation of each area of the prison will be inspected and staff
functions monitored," he said. "All procedures will be reviewed for
appropriateness, and all areas of concern will be addressed to ensure a
high level of security is in place at this facility.

"We will look at offender movement and the offender accountability
process. I hope this task can be completed in the next three to six
weeks. These are all areas that I must be comfortable with before I will
take this facility off of lockdown."

The prison has been under lockdown since Woods' escape was discovered.
