Spirit of Dakota nominations sought

By Journal staff

HURON If you know a woman who illustrates the best of South Dakota womanhood, you have until Aug. 6 to nominate her for the 2001 Spirit of Dakota Award.

The Spirit of Dakota Award honors a South Dakota woman for her life's work in various endeavors, such as community service, health care, professional/business, religious, fine arts/humanities or nonprofit leadership. The nominee also might promote the social, civil, cultural and/or educational advancement of others.

Nomination forms are available at all South Dakota chambers of commerce or by calling the Huron Area Chamber of Commerce at (800) 487-6673. Nominations must be made on the official form, submitted with a typewritten cover letter explaining why the person is being nominated and listing some of her activities and achievements.

Nominations should include two letters of recommendation and photographs suitable for reprinting. Computer-generated photos must be accompanied by a disk containing the photo in .gif format. Deadline is Aug. 6.

Nominees do not need to be South Dakota natives but must be current state residents. A committee made up of residents from across the state will choose the winner.

The award will be presented Oct. 6 during a banquet and ceremony at Crossroads Hotel and Convention Center in Huron, where artist Dale Lamphere's 9-foot sculpture, "Spirit of Dakota," is on display. The winner receives an award designed by Lamphere, along with a $1,000 contribution to the community project of her choice.

Past winners are Winifred Lorentson, Dr. Jeanie K. Sherman, Florence Bruhn, Jeannette Lusk, Dorothy (D.J.) Cline, Ruth Ziolkowski, Sylvia Henkin, Tatewin Means, Irene Fisher Coon, Hildreth Marie Twostars Venegas, Lorraine Huntimer, Mary Lou Tripp, Marsha Sumpter and Donna Schipke.

This will be the fourth year the Spirit of Dakota Awards Society has offered a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior girl who demonstrates her understanding of the Spirit of Dakota and exhibits growth potential through her community involvement, scholastic achievements and abilities.
