Convicted murderer Larry Woods, who escaped from the Indiana State
Prison July 9, may have been sighted in Greensburg, Ind., Indiana State
Police officials said Tuesday, after Woods was shown on the Fox
television program "America's Most Wanted" Saturday night.
Indiana State Police investigator David Kirkham, who is handling the
case, said the only tip the show received regarding the case linked
Woods to Greensburg, which lies between Indianapolis and Cincinnati near
Interstate 74. U.S. 421, which has its north terminus in Michigan City,
also passes through Greensburg.
"The Greensburg Police Department is sending us an information packet
about a possible sighting," Kirkham said.
Kirkham assisted the show with information about the case, and flew to
Washington, D.C., the night of the show, which was pre-taped, to handle
any calls relating to Woods. Kirkham also furnished "America's Most
Wanted" with a picture of a tattoo that Woods' former girlfriend has.
She told police Woods may have a matching tattoo on his chest.
The Indiana State Police, which is handling the criminal investigation,
is still working in conjunction with the Indiana Department of
Correction on the case.
The DOC is still conducting its own investigation through its Internal
Affairs department. Indiana State Prison administrative assistant Dale
Monroe said no new leads have emerged in the prison's investigation, and
said that authorities are no longer searching the Deercroft Recycling
Center, where the garbage truck Woods is believed to have escaped on
dumped its refuse July 9.
"We're not physically over there, but nothing has been ruled out,"
Monroe said.
While the authorities collaborate and share information, neither agency
has ultimate power over the continuing search, according to Kirkham.
"I'm in charge of the criminal investigation, while they're working on
it internally at the prison," Kirkham said.
"They call me with leads they get from prisoners and employees, while I
have access to computer terminals and other law enforcement agencies
that open up other avenues, like criminal history checks. The effort's
coordinated so we don't cross paths."
