LA Inmates to Split $27M Settlement

.c The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Hundreds of thousands of former jail inmates may be
eligible to share a $27 million settlement because they were held past their
release dates or subjected to unlawful strip searches.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved the
settlement for five class-action lawsuits. The settlement must still be
approved by judges involved in the cases.

Most of the money will go to the 62 plaintiffs, but attorneys also plan to
send notices to as many as 400,000 former inmates who could receive $50 to
$5,000 each.

Some affected inmates were held for up to a week beyond their ordered
release.

Sheriff's department officials blamed clerical errors for detaining scores of
inmates beyond their release dates. And in some cases, inmates were wrongly
incarcerated because of erroneous warrants. The problems date back to the
mid- to late 1990s.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is the largest in the nation and
has custody of 19,000 to 22,000 inmates per day.

Sheriff Lee Baca has promised immediate reforms.

``It's not pleasing for me to stand up in front of the county of Los Angeles
and talk about a $27 million judgment in those terms,'' Baca said at a news
conference. ``My greater wish would have been that the sheriff's department
did the right thing when these claims were coming in at the earlier stages of
their existence and that we quickly got to the problem and fixed it.''

About $5.5 million of the settlement money will cover attorney fees.
