Riding in on the Waves at Midnight
by Suzanne Westerly Journalist/Photographer
The annual Grunion Festival was held on a typical warm sunny day in July at
Pacific Beach. Organizers and performers from the JuaneÒo Band of Mission
Indians Acjachemem Nation and the Kumeyaay Nation organized a wonderful
afternoon. People from near and far, gathered for the annual Grunion
Festival, which is a revival of a tradition of the Southern California
Indians. "Today is the event that brings the ocean, the desert and the
mountain people together," said Joyce Perry, "a social event for the
indigenous people and an educational event for the non-indigenous people.
This is Abel's vision. He has been doing this for a long time."

Growing Success in the Desert
by Stephen Hume Special to the Vancouver Sun
OLIVER, BC - Drive south down Black Sage Road across the arid benches left by
retreating ice age lakes and you find yourself snaking toward the U.S. border
through the heat shimmers and some of the province's most productive
vineyards. The lush green rows and the hiss of sprinklers end abruptly at a
long straight line of rusty barbed wire. On the other side, the northern toe
of the Great Sonoran Desert rolls away toward Mexico in an expanse of twisted
antelope brush, bitterroot and prickly pear.

Path of the Feathers
by Timm Severud with forward by Vicki Lockard
"In two Utah decisions released last week, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals
said the federal government can prohibit non-Indians from possessing eagle
feathers.
And in a third decision, based on a New Mexico case, the court restored the
right to posses eagle feathers to potentially millions of American Indians,
ruling the government cannot legally restrict that right to members of
federally recognized tribes."
