from JH via ndn-aim thanks Fwiw <http://www.yankton.net/stories/082101/new_0821010013.shtml> Tuesday, August 21, 2001 Midwest Digest: "Sierra Club Supports Return Of Land" RAPID CITY (AP) -- "The chairman of the Black Hills Group of the Sierra Club says the group supports returning federal land in the Black Hills to the Sioux Tribes. Brain Brademeyer of Rapid City, said the group's executive committee voted Aug. 9 to officially endorse the Sioux's claims. Brademeyer made the comments during a Forest Policy Summit last week in Rapid City. The event was organized by Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., to discuss forest issues. Daschle opposed legislation in the 1980s that would have turned land in the Black Hills over to the Sioux tribes. In 1868, the United States signed a treaty setting aside the Black Hills "for the absolute and undisturbed use and occupancy of the Sioux." Then gold was discovered there, and Congress took the land after negotiations to purchase it broke down. Since then the Sioux have repeatedly turned down money from the federal government in exchange for the land." Copyright 2001 Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan. _____________________________________________. ===== FREE LEONARD PELTIER NOW STOP THE ETHNIC CLEANSING OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE TO SUBSCRIBE TO NDN-AIM SEND A BLANK EMAIL TO: [EMAIL PROTECTED] WORKING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN REAL LIFE __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
