Zuni Pueblo Will Not Compromise on Protecting Vital Salt Lake
by Suzanne Westerly Journalist/Photographer
As they have for many centuries, the people from the Pueblo Nations of Zuni,
Hopi, Acoma, and Laguna, and the people from the Mescalero Apache Nation and
the Ramah Navajo Nation, still walk the ancient foot trails to gather salt at
Zuni Salt Lake for religious purposes. The Salt Lake and the surrounding area
is of central religious importance in the lives of the Zuni and other tribal
people of the area. According to the Zunis, the salt is the flesh of Salt
Mother, a diety who resides at Zuni Salt Lake. "It is one of our most
significant sacred sites, the Zuni Salt Lake, " explained Governor Bowekaty.

You Are What You Eat-Pesticides in the Cupboard
by Kasey Weaver
A few weeks ago I bought some fresh produce from a local farmer. I couldn’t
wait to sink my teeth into one of those juicy tomatoes. Common sense
prevailed however. It wasn’t a little dirt I was worried about, but the
common use of pesticides on food crops that curtailed my enjoyment. While
living in Nebraska, radio stations played commercials for herbicide and
pesticide companies. Advertisements were seen along the road and on
television as well. It seemed that pesticides are as necessary to plant
growth as water, soil and sun.

Earth Day: 2001-Forever
by Jamie Lockard
Earth Day…I’ve always considered it a silly tradition. Not a silly cause,
mind you, but a silly tradition. The reason, simply put, is my personal
opinion that Earth Day should be everyday. Now, please don’t misunderstand, I
agreed whole-heartedly that it is a good cause and a good concept. At least,
I felt this way until recently.

Craft Series - Preparing Feathers for Crafts- Part One
by Lynne Sageflower Pennington
Most of the time when we buy feathers or are given feathers they are already
cleaned. Below are the ways that were taken before you received the feather.
Some feathers are obtained when they fall off the bird which do not need to
be cleaned. Others may be obtained from hunting or birds whom have been
killed by cars and trucks on the road. These need to be cleaned. The birds
that are found on the road must be freshly killed otherwise you will find
insects thoughout the body and feathers. This means to leave the carcass
there the feathers are damaged.
