"There are stars whose radiance is visible on earth though
they have long been extinct. There are people whose
brilliance continues to light the world though they are no
longer among the living. These lights are particularly
bright when the night is dark."
~ Hannah Senesh ~

I have received many moving and thoughful messages
from around the world via email. Here is one I'd like to
share with you. Thank you for submitting it, Diana.
Walk Toward The Light
(For All Rescue Workers And Those Who Love Them)
This is for all the rescue workers who have risked and
sacrificed so much in an effort to save anyone at all
from the World Trade Center and Pentagon. A friend
of mine sent me an on-line article yesterday about the
5 rescue workers being saved recently, and I was so
very glad and relieved for them, and for their loved ones.
Even so, I remained gripped with the brutality and tragedy
of the many who have died. Ever since I heard about how
the firefighters had run in so shortly before the building
went down, I have asked myself repeatedly,
"Did they know it would be like that?"

The feeling of awe I am experiencing, the tremendous
unconditional and unselfish love demonstrated by their
heroic acts, has required me to develop a philosophy
about their fate. I wanted to give them something back.
They deserve an offering of love equal to the valor they
displayed. And I wanted to give something to those who
continue to follow in their example; searching for signs
of life hour after hour, day after day; writing their names
on body parts so that their remains might be identified if
they were to join the fallen.

What I wish to give every one of you is this: A place
in my heart and mind, and in the hearts and minds of
everyone who hears your legend, where you can remain
forever. A place where every one of you can finish the work
you had set out to do; A place where everyone you struggled
to reach is safe and sound; A place where you can make
your peace, secure in the knowledge that you have done all
that you could humanly do; A place where you can know
it is okay to stop. This is what those that have gone on
before would want, I believe, more than anything. So I will
give that to them, and I will offer it to you in their honor as
a gift. Please pass this legend on so that the heroism of
their sacrifice might go on to outshine the tragic shadow
of their untimely deaths. We can honor them this way.
We can close the circle.
Here is my story:

I heard a man talking on the news yesterday about how
he was in a restaurant at the World Trade Center when,
within a very short while, the place was filled with nearly
impenetrable, choking black smoke. He was certain he
was dying when he saw a light beam cut through and a
voice said, "Walk toward the light." It was the firefighters
on the stairwell. He got out and ran so fast down the stairs
that he fell down them. He then got up, ran and fell again.
He ran until he was some distance from the building,
when suddenly the whole thing collapsed.

The building collapsed and the rescue workers had barely
begun what they had set out to do. How many people did
they save? I wondered. How many? How many could they
have saved in such a short amount of time? Did they know
the building was about to go down? But the number of people
they were able to get out alive was apparently not the issue
for them. Their own survival was also not the issue. The issue
was this: To save as many as they could, however many that
was. That is all.

But what about their families? I cried to myself. What about
their children? I wrestled with these questions. I constricted
under their weight. I saw black smoke, and felt the air thick
and muddy. My heart was in knots and my mind froze in fear
and grief for them, and for those they left behind. How could
they sacrifice so much? I wondered. Then the words ran back
through my mind, and a feeling of relief flooded over me. Then
the words ran through my head again, but this time a little faster.
I felt the knots unbind and my mind relax. The words I heard
repeating in my head were the words that the man had spoken
in the interview that morning. They were, "Walk toward the light."

This is how I came to know, just as sure as I was of anything,
that theirs was a much higher purpose. As much to save the
lives of all they could, it seems to me that people with that much
courage would not be afraid to die, and might actually have gone
in with the destiny of helping to lead the victims to a safe place
in the afterlife.

I make this as a peace offering to everyone who hears or reads
this. I offer these words as a possiblity, if any one cares to believe
them, because I, myself, believe them. I have been taught that
when you have such a clear and unswerving purpose in and
commitment to life, that the energy doesn't stop just because
your body does. I also believe that when some people die suddenly
and brutally like the victims, they are prone to wander around
indefinitely in a state of confusion that prevents them from crossing
over, because they keep trying to rejoin the living, trying to find
comfort, trying to resolve the crisis of their dying hour.

Somehow I think that those rescue workers had the strength of
conviction enough to shine a light clear over to the other side for
all of those who might have otherwise become lost souls. And
because of that, I think they are all safe now, wherever they are.
Because of the rescue workers that chose to follow them, I think
they will all find peace and rest. That's how I see it, anyway.
And I don't think it is so far the realm of possibility.

I hope my story offers some small consolation to you in the wake
of such an overwhelmingly tragic situation.
